SHIFT SUPERVISOR

DESCRIPTION: Has direct responsibility for security and operational requirements of the facility. Provides direct supervision of all assistant shift supervisors and resident supervisors/residential counselor assigned to their shift to include training, scheduling, counseling, evaluation, and performance appraisal. Monitors staff performance and activities. Interprets and explains orders, policies, practices, and procedures and other operational information to subordinate personnel. Coordinates and prepares briefing for each shift change operation. Oversees the general security of the facility and all operations within. Supports the housing unit and intake operations as required. Assigns shift staff to various posts within the facility in accordance with the operational requirements. Schedules juvenile movements within and out of facility. Ensures that juveniles going to court are ready in a timely manner. Ensures that visitors to the facility are properly supervised and escorted. Inspects all floor areas relative to security, sanitation, and safety requirements. Holds communication meetings with members of the shift team. Evaluates subordinate staff job performance, instructs and counsels staff in required duty performance standards and recommends appropriate action. Dispatch personal to intake or release as required. Participates in the development and implementation of the recreational program and the development and implementation of discipline procedures. Provides crisis management for individuals and groups through verbal de-escalation or, if necessary, physical intervention or restraint. Provide temporary relief for security personal and emergency coverage beyond scheduled hours and willing to work shifts as assigned by administration. Under the supervision of the nurse or physician, distribute prescription and non-prescription medications to detainees/residents. Document events and other vital information by entering data into the facility’s computerized information system or written logs and reports. Participate as a member of diagnostic/treatment teams to develop services or needs assessment plans for individual detainees/residents. Be certified in and able to provide emergency first aid and C.P.R. and attend mandated training and other training seminars as required. Perform such other duties as assigned by administration.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must possess comprehensive knowledge of detention practices; ability to plan and implement procedures to enhance the overall institution’s operation; to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; to interpret and explain written policies and procedures to institutional staff; to perform employee relations management functions; must possess the skills and abilities to work with staff and residents; and to control and direct security staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from an accredited two-year degree program or higher with a degree in criminal justice, social sciences, or a related field.

A degree can be waived with a minimum of four (4) years experience working in the field with delinquent or maladjusted youth in a residential setting, or experience in the field of corrections, law enforcement or social work. College degree is preferred.


ASSISTANT SHIFT SUPERVISOR

CLOSING DATE: Applications must be submitted online by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 28, 2025.

DESCRIPTION: Under the supervision of the shift supervisor, the assistant shift supervisor has the responsibility for the security and operational requirements of the facility to include medical, classrooms, visitation, perimeter security, service delivery, and movement control. Provides roving coverage for relief and backup support for housing unit supervision and emergency requirements. In the absence of the shift supervisor, assumes the duties and responsibilities of shift supervisor. Provides assistance in all secure areas and non-secure areas of the facility, perimeter security, service delivery, and visitation. Participate in the development and implementation of discipline procedures. Participate in the development and implementation of the recreational program. Interviews new detainees/residents regarding personal data and their legal status. Documents events and other vital information by entering data into the facility’s computerized information system, case files or written logs. Provide crisis management for individuals and groups through verbal de-escalation or, if necessary, physical intervention or restraint. Under the direction of the nurse or physician, distributes prescription and non-prescription medications to detainees/residents, checks and records vital signs as indicated by medical protocol. Is available to provide emergency coverage beyond scheduled hours and willing to work shifts on a rotating basis as assigned by administration. Assist in secure and non-secure transportation away from the facility. Be certified in and able to provide emergency first aid and C.P.R. and attend mandated training and other training seminars as required. Perform duties of suburbanites and relieve Posts as required. Perform such other duties as assigned by administration.

A degree can be waived with a minimum of two (2) years experience working in the field with delinquent or maladjusted youth in a residential setting, or experience in the field of corrections or social work. This experience may be substituted with military experience that involved extensive leadership responsibilities.

College degree is preferred.
